Another Low Power TV installation

One of the many projects we are currently finishing up. Over-The-Air TV is making a comeback.

A few things about LPTV; These stations usually have an ERP of 15 KW or less, and they are a secondary service, like FM translators, which a full-power TV station can displace.

This is an ATT microwave site built in 1977 according to county records. This may have been one of those VHF Mobile Telephone sites which existed before cellular telephone systems. ATT owned it until 2022 when it was sold to a private business.

This station is on channel 31 or 575 MHz center frequency. UHF TV stations often use slot antennas, which have gobs of gain. Slot antennas are simple designs that have a broad bandwidth and until recently were mostly horizontally polarized. This particular antenna is elliptically polarized which is becoming more common as TV providers are looking at mobile video applications.

Slot antennas are the inverse of a dipole antenna. A dipole is two conductive poles approximately 1/2 wavelength surrounded by free space whereas a slot antenna is 1/2 wavelength of free space surrounded by a conductive plane. The width of the slot determines the bandwidth of the antenna. Radiation from a dipole is in the plane of the two poles versus the radiation from a slot that is perpendicular to the slot. At UHF frequencies, many slots are placed on the radiating plane, giving large gain figures.

All TV transmitters require a bandpass or mask filter. This is to keep out-of-band emissions out of the tightly packed TV spectrum.

These filters need to attenuate the upper and lower shoulders of the digital carrier by 46dB +/- 3.25 MHz from the center frequency.

These are fairly straightforward filters, this one has six cavities with plungers that slide in and out to adjust the tuning. I watched one of these get retuned in the field, it takes quite a bit of time and patience to complete and requires a two-port network analyzer.

With the TPO of 400 watts, the ERP is 4.7 KW horizontal and 2.35 KW vertical.

So, why bother with all of this? Indeed that is a good question. As cable companies continue to raise their rates (the average cable TV bill is $250 or so) people are looking for alternatives. Cord cutting is a thing and OTA (over-the-air) TV as well as OTT (over-the-top or direct streaming) are popular alternatives.

  1. Nice installation. LD’s are popping up in lots of places nowadays. It sets one to thinkin’, as they say back in the holler. I’m almost wondering if we’re heading to where the Brits ended up years ago, with main stations and “gap filler” translators, except with more than BBC-1/2, ITV, and Channel 4 for program streams. Makes you wonder if it’s cheaper to have a 2000′ stick and big transmitter in one place, or 5-6 400′ sticks and medium power, or 20-30 100′ sticks and low power, especially when GPS-synced up together on the same freq.

  2. With ATSC 3, you can make a Same Frequency Network (SFN) out of several lower-power signals. Everything synced up with GPS and from what I read, works fairly well.
    I know the Low Power stations that are near big cities do pretty well audience was.

  3. Paul, could you care to comment on a very odd story coming out of rural Alabama about station WJLX that had their 200-foot transmit tower torn down (apparently by metal thieves, the entire thing is *gone*)?

    What’s really weird is the station is reporting that the FCC has denied their request to erect a temporary FM antenna to get back on the air :

    The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has denied our request to remain on the air on 101.5 FM. Today, we shut down our transmitter and our programming will be streamed via internet and our apps only until we can restore our 1240 AM frequency.”

    Transmitter sites are federally-protected, so stealing that tower is a guaranteed visit to a federal prison for those morons. What baffles me is why the FCC is denying a return to emergency service.

  4. WJLX is an AM station, without the AM station the FM translator cannot be on the air. FCC rules are clear about that. I read that the thieves stole the tower and the transmitter. If they can get any AM signal back on the air with a temporary antenna, then they will be able to turn the FM back on.

    As for how this happened; I don’t have any information first hand, but if I were to speculate… I’d say most people were listening to the FM including anyone working for the station. Thus, when the AM went off, nobody knew or cared. I looked at the site on Google Maps, it looks pretty hidden behind an industrial area next to some train tracks. Probably lots of trucks going in and out so a few more would not be noticed.

    One more thing; I have watched a three man tower crew drop a 270 foot tower, cut it into pieces, and stack it on a truck in less than two hours using battery powered sawzalls. Radio station owners really need to get serious about site security and install some cameras. They are not that expensive.
