I worked at the NSGA CDAA in Winter Harbor Maine for over 30 years… starting as CTO2 and then as the civilian mechanic and foreman and also ran with John Chalupski’s NESSEC team of techies to inspect Navy CDAA sites word wide. The Navy and Air Force sites evolved like a fine wine, largely through trial and error and it was exciting to be a part of all. I actually cried like a baby when they tore down the Winter Harbor site. So many friends and memories and unsung heros.
I ran the antennas in Rota Spain from 1987 through 1989 tag teaming with retired Commander Jack Fuller where we had 120 wooden poles to support the low band boom boards. While the Air Force used steel towers, only three of the Navy CDAA sites had metal towers, Winter Harbor, Guam and Okinawa. Winter Harbor was the legacy of the incredible Max Gunn, and we were very proud of our history from otter creek long lines to the Corea sites CDAA and Classic Wizard radomes.
