Delta Current Sample Toroid

There are many “Kloodgers” in the broadcast industry, and I have certainly seen worse than this piece of work. I think a Ball Gap above the feed point is really what is needed ALONG with a good ground system. WGY is old and there may not be any copper radials left do to corrosion over the years. Or ground connections to a suitable Earth Ground may be faulty. Measuring the ground resistance with a device from Harger Industries (Grayslake, Illinois) called the “Megger” is worthy of discussion. Several versions of this device will pinpoint a crummy ground. It is typical for many in the broadcasting industry to take “Grounding” for granted. A poor grounding system at WGY can lessen effective field intensity, but more importantly cause the destructive effects of a lightning hit to wipe out an installation. The cellular industry is fussy about getting a low impedance ground because lightning is a major threat to the sensitive data equipment at a cell site. Get a “Megger” and check how good your system ground is. Install a new uni-potential ground bus and make all connections with Cadweld or high temperature or Silver solder. And don’t forget to restore the MW50B VSWR protection!

John, This was years ago. In 1994 we did a complete check up on the WGY ground system with a megger and found no broken radials. Of course, the fact that they are #4 hard drawn copper might have something to do with that.

The MW50′s SWR circuit was restored, I believe that transmitter was replaced with at DX50 in 2002 or so. It may still exist as a backup, but I am not sure. My recollection of the MW50 was it was better to leave them on all the time, intermittent service was spotty at best.
