{"id":733,"date":"2010-04-02T20:20:39","date_gmt":"2010-04-03T00:20:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2023-07-09T16:01:58","modified_gmt":"2023-07-09T20:01:58","slug":"steelyard-over-the-horizon-radar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/2010\/04\/steelyard-over-the-horizon-radar\/","title":{"rendered":"STEELYARD Over The Horizon Radar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This does not have much application for broadcast radio, other than the technical facilities are fascinating. \u00a0I did once hear the slow speed version on 500 KHz distress and calling frequency, which is below the broadcast band. \u00a0 \u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duga-3\" target=\"_blank\">DUGA-3<\/a> Over <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Over-the-horizon_radar\" target=\"_blank\">The Horizon Radar<\/a> (OTH) was a Soviet early warning radar system that operated on<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High_frequency\" target=\"_blank\"> HF<\/a> (between 3-30 MHz). \u00a0When I was in military communications, stationed on Guam, we were often plagued with the &#8220;woodpecker&#8221; sound, oftentimes pegging the signal strength meter on whatever frequency we were using. On any typical day, at least once or twice we would have to change frequencies due to the &#8220;RAT TATATATATATATATATATATATATAT!&#8221; coming in over the top of what we were trying to do. \u00a0Anyone who listened to shortwave radio or was a ham radio operator from the mid 70&#8217;s on through 1989 will be familiar with the sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NATO classification for the system was STEELYARD. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know if it is a coincidence or not, but the name fits the system design. There were three systems, one located near Chornobyl, inside the evacuation zone, which was abandoned intact. \u00a0The second was near in Ukraine, outside of the Chornobyl exclusion zone, and the third was on the Russian Pacific coast, near the island of Sakhalin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, it operated in the HF frequency range, 3-30 MHz with a power of about 10 million watts (some sources up to 40 MW). \u00a0The propagation conditions were continuously monitored with an ionospheric chirp sounder (the civilian version looks something like this). \u00a0The best frequency for the target area was then chosen and used without regard to band plans or frequency planning. \u00a0In fact, often the Soviet shortwave propaganda station Radio Moscow was also interfered with. \u00a0The target areas were the missile launching and testing areas used by the US and Great Britain. \u00a0The object resolution was about 15 km, which is not that good, but good enough to determine the origin and flight path of a potential missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/duga-3-array-distant-view.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/duga-3-array-distant-view.jpg\" alt=\"Distant view STEELYARD OTHR array, Chernobyl, Ukraine\" class=\"wp-image-743\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Distant view STEELYARD OTHR array, Chernobyl, Ukraine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The remains of the DUGA-3 array near Chornobyl represent some real engineering feats. \u00a0First off, the tall towers are 146 meters (479 feet tall), the short towers are 90 meters tall (295 feet) \u00a0and the system is aligned in a row 750 meters (2,460 feet long). The taller towers are for lower frequencies because they have larger transmit antenna elements, thus the shorter towers are for higher frequencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dugu-3-array_chornobyl2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dugu-3-array_chornobyl2.jpg\" alt=\"Side view STEELYARD OTHR, Chernobyl, Ukraine\" class=\"wp-image-744\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Side view STEELYARD OTHR, Chernobyl, Ukraine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The array itself is quite an impressive close-up. \u00a0The cage like devices are the radiating elements of the antenna. \u00a0The elements are feed by open wire feed line from the bottom of the tower.\u00a0 Behind the radiating elements, you can see a series of wires, these acted as a reflector, directing the energy transmitted out the front of the array.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dugu-3-aray.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dugu-3-aray.jpg\" alt=\"Active transmitting elements, OTHR\" class=\"wp-image-745\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Active transmitting elements, OTHR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering the wind load, these are substantial towers. \u00a0I would say the wind load on the face of the tower would be almost equivalent to flat plate. \u00a0The towers are strongly back-braced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/duda-3-ground-level-transmitting-towers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/duda-3-ground-level-transmitting-towers.jpg\" alt=\"Under the towers, OTHR\" class=\"wp-image-747\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Under the towers, OTHR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ionospheric chirp sounder receive antenna is also located at a site known as &#8220;The Circle.&#8221;
