Basically, the earth and the troposphere were used as reflectors, creating a type of duct.\u00a0 It is noted the SEVER and the GOREEZONT (HORIZONT) systems used both space and frequency diversity as a part of their system.\u00a0 Frequency diversity means that there were as many as five identical signals transmitted on different frequencies at the same time.\u00a0 Space diversity means that two or more transmit and receive antennas were used, as can be seen in the picture.\u00a0 This site was run by the military but would have likely carried civilian communications as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEVER-troposcatter-system.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEVER-troposcatter-system-650x420.jpg\" alt=\"SEVER troposcatter communication system\" class=\"wp-image-7218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEVER-troposcatter-system-650x420.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEVER-troposcatter-system-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEVER-troposcatter-system-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEVER-troposcatter-system-400x258.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEVER-troposcatter-system.jpg 964w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">SEVER troposcatter communication system<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, it was a way to maintain communications across vast distances when wired or microwave systems were not practical or possible.
