This morning, I woke up and, Hey Now!\u00a0 It would seem there is trouble brewing out in the ocean.\u00a0 The weather people are talking of some superstorm, a combination of a category two hurricane and a winter blizzard with a tsunami and a bit of dust bowl thrown in for good measure.\u00a0 Okay, I made up the dust bowl part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the five-day forecast:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/at201218_5day.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/at201218_5day.gif\" alt=\"Hurricane Sandy five day\" class=\"wp-image-5730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/at201218_5day.gif 640w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/at201218_5day-150x112.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/at201218_5day-300x225.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/at201218_5day-400x300.gif 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hurricane Sandy five day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It looks like the Mid-Atlantic coast is in for a direct hit, but the probabilities include coastal NY, NJ, and CT.\u00a0 Thus, storm preparation has begun.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s list is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check All backup generators, and refuel as needed.\u00a0 Check oil, water, battery water, etc.\u00a0 Make sure the generator starts from the remote command.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check all backup transmitters, where installed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check other backup systems, such as STLs, sump pumps, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure that buildings are secure and any loose items are secured.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps this storm will be one of those over-hyped non-events.\u00a0 Only time will tell, however.\u00a0 If it continues on its present course, then personal preparation will consist of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Procuring a good flashlight with fresh batteries for the tool kit (perhaps several).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking care of household needs for the storm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full set of mechanical tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some extra food and water in the work truck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A change of dry clothes in the work truck, including shoes or boots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sleeping bag in the work truck.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Better to be prepared than to sit in wet clothes wishing it wasn&#8217;t so.&nbsp; More updates to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saturday, 8 am Update:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Hurricane\/Tropical Storm Irene, it was the rainfall that did the most damage.\u00a0 Looking at the current rainfall predictions, it appears the worst of it will be to the south by a good bit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rainfall_Days_1-5.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rainfall_Days_1-5-650x520.gif\" alt=\"Hurricane Sandy Rainfall prediction\" class=\"wp-image-5736\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rainfall_Days_1-5-650x520.gif 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rainfall_Days_1-5-150x119.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rainfall_Days_1-5-300x239.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rainfall_Days_1-5-400x320.gif 400w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rainfall_Days_1-5.gif 895w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hurricane Sandy Rainfall prediction<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These things can change as the storm progresses, continuing with preparations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Update, Sunday afternoon, 3pm:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storm is still progressing more or less along the forecast track. Further to the south and in coastal areas, there is a strong possibility of flooding. Around this area and north, it looks like it will be a mostly wind event, with only 3-4 inches of rain predicted.
