I have never seen one of these in the field. They look like very sturdy units:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"485\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-485x600.jpg\" alt=\"General Electric XT-1-A Standard Broadcast transmitter\" class=\"wp-image-5045\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-485x600.jpg 485w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-121x150.jpg 121w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-400x494.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">General Electric XT-1-A Standard Broadcast transmitter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the day when AM was king, no expense was spared on transmitting equipment.\u00a0 I remember the GE BTA-25 transmitter from the same era, it was built like a tank.\u00a0 Once, while we were repairing the Harris MW-50A main transmitter, the old GE burped, sputtered, and threw an IPA overload, then returned to air.\u00a0 I looked in the IPA cabinet and found a mica capacitor had been blown in half.\u00a0 It was in the tuning circuit, but apparently, there was still enough capacitance in the circuit for the transmitter to keep running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This unit looks similar to that one.&nbsp; The simplified schematic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-schematic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-schematic-650x477.jpg\" alt=\"General Electric XT-1-A schematic diagram\" class=\"wp-image-5046\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-schematic-650x477.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-schematic-150x110.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-schematic-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-schematic-400x294.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A-schematic.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">General Electric XT-1-A schematic diagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like other 1 KW AM transmitter designs, this unit uses the venerable 833A triode.\u00a0 There are some advantages of this tube, as extra circuits for PA stage neutralization are not needed.\u00a0 The full sales brochure can be found <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/GE-XT-1-A.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> (medium-sized .pdf).\u00a0 These were manufactured in Syracuse, NY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The asking price in 1948 was $8.730.00, tax and shipping extra.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I found this photograph in a filing cabinet the other day as a part of a sales proposal dated 1948.
