The backup is the Harris FM20H3 on the right. I haven&#8217;t turned that unit on lately, but it normally makes quite a fuss the first time the Plate On button is pushed. The FM20T is still on its original tube. \u00a0I looked up the maintenance records for this transmitter, it was installed in December of 2000. \u00a0Eleven years later, the <del>4CX15000A<\/del> (ed note; 4CX12000A) is still cranking out 15 KW TPO, which is impressive. \u00a0I found that high-power ceramic vacuum tubes actually seem to last longer when run closer to their limits than those that are running at half power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/2010\/06\/filament-voltage-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judicious management of filament voltage<\/a> is required to achieve this type of longevity. &nbsp;There is a set procedure for installing a large ceramic vacuum tube:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After the tube is in the transmitter, run it at a full filament voltage for at least an hour or so before turning on the plate voltage. \u00a0This allows the getter to absorb any stray gases in the tube.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the plate voltage is applied, proper tuning should be completed as quickly as possible. \u00a0Tuning procedures vary from transmitter to transmitter, however, the general idea is to obtain the maximum power output for the least amount of plate current while keeping the PA bandwidth within acceptable limits. \u00a0Some transmitters can get narrow-banded at high efficiencies, which manifests itself as higher AM noise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the tube has been in use for 90-100 hours, the filament voltage should be reduced gradually until a drop in the transmitter output power is noticed, then increased by 0.1 volts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This maximizes the filament life for that particular transmitter and power output. &nbsp;Once the filament can no longer boil off enough electrons, the tube power output drops and it is time to replace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This site also has two other radio stations, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WZMR\" target=\"_blank\">WZMR<\/a>, 104.9 \u00a0and <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WAJZ\" target=\"_blank\">WAJZ<\/a> 96.3 , both class A using solid-state transmitters of less than 1,000 watts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WZMR-WAJZ-transmitters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WZMR-WAJZ-transmitters.jpg\" alt=\"WAJZ and WZMR Energy Onix solid state transmitters\" class=\"wp-image-4257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WZMR-WAJZ-transmitters.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WZMR-WAJZ-transmitters-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WZMR-WAJZ-transmitters-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WZMR-WAJZ-transmitters-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">WAJZ and WZMR Energy Onix solid-state transmitters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not the prettiest sight in the world, but it does stay on the air. &nbsp;There is no money to go back and neaten up this work, unfortunately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tower supports all three antennas. &nbsp;There was some discussion of a common antenna for all three stations, however, WZMR is a directional station, thus it would require its own antenna. &nbsp;Doing a common antenna for the other two stations was cost prohibitive, so the tower supports three two bay antennas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WYJB-WZMR-WAJZ-antennas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WYJB-WZMR-WAJZ-antennas.jpg\" alt=\"WYJB, WZMR, WAJZ FM antennas, New Scotland, NY\" class=\"wp-image-4258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WYJB-WZMR-WAJZ-antennas.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WYJB-WZMR-WAJZ-antennas-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WYJB-WZMR-WAJZ-antennas-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/WYJB-WZMR-WAJZ-antennas-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">WYJB, WZMR, WAJZ FM antennas, New Scotland, NY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The stations are all located in the New Scotland, NY tower farm. &nbsp;WYJB is licensed to Albany, WZMR is licensed to Altamont and WAJZ is licensed to Voorheesville.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the main transmitter for WYJB in Albany, NY.
