{"id":2868,"date":"2011-04-29T08:00:47","date_gmt":"2011-04-29T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2023-04-30T12:47:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-30T16:47:00","slug":"transmitter-trips-main-breaker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/2011\/04\/transmitter-trips-main-breaker\/","title":{"rendered":"Transmitter trips main breaker"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Received a call last night, after a particularly bad thunderstorm, that WGHQ in Kingston, NY was off the air. \u00a0Earlier in the day, the transmitter had tripped the main breaker after a thunderstorm. \u00a0I arrived at the transmitter site and found the breaker tripped again. \u00a0Once the breaker was reset, the transmitter came back on and ran without any overload indications. \u00a0The transmitter is a 10-year-old Nautel ND-5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Nautel-ND-5-transmitter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Nautel-ND-5-transmitter.jpg\" alt=\"WGHQ Nautel ND-5 transmitter\" class=\"wp-image-2301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Nautel-ND-5-transmitter.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Nautel-ND-5-transmitter-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Nautel-ND-5-transmitter-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Nautel-ND-5-transmitter-400x239.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">WGHQ Nautel ND-5 transmitter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I was thinking of breaker fatigue as the breaker is the original 1960 breaker installed when the building was built. \u00a0I reset the breaker and turned the power output down to 3 KW, thinking the reduced load might not trip the breaker until we could get a replacement. \u00a0The transmitter was on the air running as I was about to lock up and go home when I heard, but more felt through the floor, a THUMP! There I stood and watched the transmitter go dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least it happened when I was there looking at it. \u00a0Because of the lightning, I was thinking of something in the output network. \u00a0I reset the breaker and once again, no faults, and the transmitter came back on. \u00a0Strange. \u00a0Obviously some sort of power supply issue. \u00a0Here are the clues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The B- voltage was right where it should be at 72 volts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All other readings, reflected power, forward power, and power supply current are normal before and after the breaker trip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No fault lights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The service panel breaker, which was tripping, is rated for 70 amps, and the transmitter front panel breaker which did not trip, is 50 amps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nautel factory rep was thinking either breaker fatigue or the big transformer in the base of the transmitter had gone bad. \u00a0According to him, no one had ever heard of a transformer going bad in these transmitters, which makes a certain amount of sense. \u00a0Unlike a tube transmitter, which steps the B+ voltage up several times, these transmitters reduce the B- voltage by about 2\/3rds or so. \u00a0With a step-up situation, a surge would be multiplied many times and could very easily punch a hole in the transformer&#8217;s secondary winding insulation. \u00a0I have, in fact, experienced this on at least two occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That leaves the wiring between the transmitter and the service panel. \u00a0I double-checked the panel breaker with my volt meter to ensure that the voltage was indeed off. \u00a0Then I removed each phase from the connection lugs in the transmitter and tested the wire to ground with my Fluke 77 DVM. \u00a0Sure enough, two of the phases showed resistance of 1.2 and 1.7 M\u03a9 to ground where it should have been infinite. \u00a0Further, when I took the cover off of the service panel, I found a dead mouse. \u00a0Unfortunately, I didn&#8217;t have any #4 THHN, and all the home improvement stores were closed by that time, so it had to wait until morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thunderstorm seems to be a coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After we pulled the wire out of the conduit, we found this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/wghq-ac-cable.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/wghq-ac-cable.jpg\" alt=\"mouse chewed feces encrusted electrical cable\" class=\"wp-image-2871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/wghq-ac-cable.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/wghq-ac-cable-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/wghq-ac-cable-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/wghq-ac-cable-400x259.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mouse chewed feces encrusted electrical cable<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a little hard to see, but that shiny spot is copper. \u00a0The cable jacket is chewed back quite a ways and the entire thing is encrusted in mouse feces and urine. \u00a0I love to work on stuff like this. \u00a0LOVE IT!
