I often wonder, am I using the best audio quality sound card? \u00a0There are some trade-offs on the quality vs. cost curve. \u00a0At the expensive end of the curve, one can spend a lot of money on an excellent sound card. \u00a0The question is, is it worth it? \u00a0The laws of diminishing returns state: No. \u00a0High-quality reproduction audio can be obtained for a reasonable price. \u00a0The one possible exception to that rule would be production studios, especially where music mix-downs occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would establish the basic requirement for a professional sound card is balanced audio in and out, either analog, digital, or preferably, both. \u00a0Almost all sound cards work on PCI bus architecture, some are available with PCMCIA (laptop) or USB. \u00a0For permanent installations, an internal PCI bus card is preferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping an apples: apples comparison, this comparison it limited to PCI bus, stereo input\/output, and analog and digital balanced audio units for general use. \u00a0Manufacturers of these cards often have other units with a higher number of input\/output combinations if that is desired. \u00a0 There are several cards to choose from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first and preferred general all-around sound card that I use is the Digigram VX222HR series. \u00a0 This is a mid-price range PCI card, running about $525.00 per copy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/VX222HR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/VX222HR-650x515.jpg\" alt=\"Digigram VX222HR professional sound card\" class=\"wp-image-2830\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/VX222HR-650x515.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/VX222HR-150x118.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/VX222HR-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/VX222HR-400x317.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/VX222HR.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Digigram VX222HR professional sound card<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the cards preferred by BE Audiovault, ENCO, and others. I have found them to be easy to install with copious documentation and driver downloads available online. \u00a0The VX series cards are available in 2, 4, 8, or 12 input\/output configurations. \u00a0The HR suffix stands for &#8220;High Resolution,&#8221; transient voltage suppression on all I\/O<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Short length PCI format (6.6 inches\/168mm)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up to 4 cards in one system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Windows 2000, XP and Linux software drivers available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several other cards and card manufactures which do not use balanced audio. &nbsp;These cards can be used with caution, but it is not recommended in high RF environments like transmitter sites or studios located at transmitter sites. &nbsp;Appropriate measures for converting audio from balanced to unbalanced must be observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, there are many ethersound systems coming into the product pipeline which convert audio directly to TCP\/IP for routing over an ethernet 802.x based network. &nbsp;These systems are coming down in price and are being looked at more favorably by broadcast groups. &nbsp;This is the future of broadcast audio.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Computer audio sound cards are the norm at nearly all radio stations.
