That, coupled with the deep snowpack and the still-frozen ground has led to some flooding. The WLNA antenna array is located along the Peekskill Hollow Creek in northern Westchester County, NY. \u00a0Back in 1980, it might have seemed like a good idea to locate an AM station in a tidal swamp along the Hudson River. \u00a0I am sure the land was not that expensive and from an engineering standpoint, having a continually wet, partially brackish ground system may have seemed like a slam dunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the idea never really panned out in the application. \u00a0First of all, the neighbors had other ideas, fighting the radio station owners all the way to the NY State Supreme Court. \u00a0Secondly, technically, it never lived up to expectations. \u00a0The original non-directional antenna on 1430 was a 1\/2 wave tower which by all accounts, worked very well. \u00a0It did not, however, allow for nighttime service, which is why the new sight and array were sought. \u00a0By the time the system was built, AM was already in steep decline and I doubt the owners ever recouped their investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to today. &nbsp;All five base insulators are under water and the transmitter is off the air. &nbsp;These are pictures from last Wednesday after the first flood waters receded from the Monday\/Tuesday storm. &nbsp;I imagine it looks worse this morning, although I don&#8217;t own a boat and won&#8217;t be wading out there to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-base-insulator.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-base-insulator.jpg\" alt=\"Base insulator, tower 2 WLNA array, Peekskill, NY\" class=\"wp-image-2563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-base-insulator.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-base-insulator-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-base-insulator-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-base-insulator-400x239.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Base insulator, tower 2 WLNA array, Peekskill, NY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is tower two of the daytime antenna array. \u00a0Clearly, it spent some time underwater. \u00a0We cleaned off all the debris from all the tower bases. \u00a0A far worse prospect is the ATU&#8217;s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-tower-1-ATU.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-tower-1-ATU.jpg\" alt=\"WLNA tower 1 ATU, Peekskill, NY\" class=\"wp-image-2564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-tower-1-ATU.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-tower-1-ATU-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-tower-1-ATU-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/WLNA-tower-1-ATU-400x239.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">WLNA tower 1 ATU, Peekskill, NY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the Antenna Tuning Unit for tower 1, which is the reference tower for both the day and night arrays. &nbsp;The E.F. \u00a0Once upon a time, this station was viable, well thought of in the community, etc. \u00a0Now, I doubt anyone knows it is off the air. \u00a0The current ownership over the last thirteen years did, what I&#8217;d like to call, a controlled flight into the ground. \u00a0Axing staff, cutting maintenance, and generally neglecting the station. \u00a0Why not take it dark for a while and figure out what to do with it?
