{"id":214,"date":"2009-08-18T15:17:43","date_gmt":"2009-08-18T19:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2023-07-09T08:28:22","modified_gmt":"2023-07-09T12:28:22","slug":"general-electric-bt-25-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/2009\/08\/general-electric-bt-25-a\/","title":{"rendered":"General Electric BT-25-A"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is one of my favorite old transmitter memories.\u00a0 Back when I landed my first Chief job, I was working for an AM\/FM combo.\u00a0 The AM station was a 50,000-watt flame thrower that first went on the air in 1947.\u00a0 The original transmitter, a <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GE\" target=\"_blank\">General Electric<\/a> BT-25-A was still in service as a backup unit.\u00a0 These pictures are from the last night it operated, December 16, 1993.\u00a0 The bank made us remove all of the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polychlorinated_biphenyl\" target=\"_blank\">PCB<\/a> transformers and capacitors before they would refinance their loan.\u00a0 Of course that was most of the transmitter, the rest of it was scraped or sold for parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/BT25-front.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/BT25-front.jpg\" alt=\"This is a long transmitter, GE BT-25-A looking from the control cabinet\" class=\"wp-image-215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/BT25-front.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/BT25-front-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This is a long transmitter, GE BT-25-A looking from the control cabinet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The transmitter takes up the entire span of the room.\u00a0 There were eight large cabinets, each with its own stage or section.\u00a0 The stages were connected to each other by a wiring trough in the floor.\u00a0 The transmitter used lead-jacketed cable within and between sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/IPA-front.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/IPA-front.jpg\" alt=\"IPA stage with &quot;multi-meters&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/IPA-front.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/IPA-front-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">IPA stage with &#8220;multi-meters&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The IPA section had been modified to use 833A tubes.&nbsp; This is where the RF was developed and amplified for the final section.&nbsp; It is in the middle cabinets of the transmitter, the audio and control section being to the left, the PA and PA power supply being to the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Final-section.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/Final-section.jpg\" alt=\"PA section. Those are WL 5891 tubes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Final section. There were three tubes, only two were in use at any given time.\u00a0 The third tube was a spare which could be quickly placed in service by throwing a knife switch and moving those bars on the back wall around.\u00a0\u00a0 This picture was taken with filament voltage only, we had to close the door to turn on the PA voltage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/blower.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/blower.jpg\" alt=\"air cooling blower\" class=\"wp-image-217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/blower.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/blower-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">air cooling blower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The transmitter was cooled by this blower which faces down into the floor.\u00a0 Concrete duct work carried the air to the various stages of the transmitter.\u00a0 The blower is powered by a 2 1\/2 HP motor.\u00a0 There were two blowers, one in use and one in standby.
