{"id":1245,"date":"2010-08-11T12:52:42","date_gmt":"2010-08-11T16:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2023-07-09T16:41:54","modified_gmt":"2023-07-09T20:41:54","slug":"iboc-update-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/2010\/08\/iboc-update-2\/","title":{"rendered":"IBOC update"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IBOC-exciter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IBOC-exciter.jpg\" alt=\"Harris Dexstar exciter\" class=\"wp-image-1249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IBOC-exciter.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IBOC-exciter-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IBOC-exciter-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/IBOC-exciter-400x301.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Harris Dexstar Exciter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I was reading several very interesting IBOC-related articles and posts today. \u00a0First of all, if Tom Ray, an engineer from WOR and a strong proponent of AM HD Radio seems a little reticent lately, well, perhaps this explains a few things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.radioworld.com\/article\/104712\">Tom Ray finds himself discouraged based on a Ford shopping experience.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d recommend reading the whole thing, however, here are some of the highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fear of HD radio going the way of FM Quad and AM Stereo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asks for an HD radio at the Ford dealership, no one can figure out what HD radio is<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WOR news director states &#8220;HD radio sucks&#8221; then asks to have his car radio programmed for analog-only<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HD radio less known than Apple iPad product<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Joe consumer would not be able to make heads or tails out of it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>RBR has more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rbr.com\/radio\/26662.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is telling that one of the most vocal proponents of IBOC would publish an article such as this. &nbsp;It seems to be diametrically opposed to the latest press release from iBiquity insisting all is well, never fear, etc. &nbsp;Perhaps it is meant to spur things on, rally the troops as it were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second item I found very interesting, Paul Riismandel from Radio Survivor fools around with a Sony XDRF1 &nbsp;HD receiver. &nbsp;He posts a great deal of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiosurvivor.com\/2010\/08\/08\/first-day-with-hd-radio-not-impressed\/#comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">information<\/a> about his experience. &nbsp;It is a good read. &nbsp;To summarize some of the points of this story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is difficult to receive HD radio signals in the Chicago Suburbs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When FM HD radio is in use, it is difficult to tell the difference in sound quality between analog and the IBOC programming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secondary channels have low bit rates and are not suitable for listening to music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radioworld.com\/article\/104604\" target=\"_blank\">Radio World<\/a>, again, states that after six months 86 FM stations have completed the allowed IBOC power upgrade. \u00a0That information is from the NAB. \u00a0I cannot find any official FCC information regarding this, I would like to know if any of those 86 stations are around here. \u00a0By the way, 86 out of 1,524 stations representing 6 percent of existing IBOC stations have been upgraded. \u00a0That makes 0.9 percent of the total number of FM stations licensed to the US running -14dBc IBOC carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will allow the reader to draw his\/her own conclusions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was reading several very interesting IBOC-related articles and posts today. \u00a0First of all, if Tom Ray, an engineer from WOR and a strong proponent of AM HD Radio seems a little reticent lately, well, perhaps this explains a few things: Tom Ray finds himself discouraged based on a Ford shopping experience.
