{"id":1108,"date":"2010-06-30T07:41:05","date_gmt":"2010-06-30T11:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2023-07-09T16:16:40","modified_gmt":"2023-07-09T20:16:40","slug":"if-the-crtc-has-any-sense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/2010\/06\/if-the-crtc-has-any-sense\/","title":{"rendered":"If the CRTC has any sense&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>They&#8217;ll run away screaming &#8220;NOOOOOOOO!&#8221; to this notion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Canada&#8217;s plan &#8220;B&#8221; might include iBiquity.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>(as reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insideradio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inside Radio<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s just hope that this is more of iBiquity&#8217;s wishful thinking, which is often presented as actual important news being based in fact. &nbsp;By iBiquity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does the <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CRTC\" target=\"_blank\">CRTC<\/a> need a plan B anyway? \u00a0Is it not enough that <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eureka_147\" target=\"_blank\">Eureka 147<\/a> failed mainly due to a lack of public interest? \u00a0If it was something that was commercially viable, wouldn&#8217;t it have taken off on its own? \u00a0Now they are thinking of ruining the FM broadcast band, which, in my experience in Canada, is working perfectly fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who says &#8220;digital&#8221; is better? &nbsp;If anything, what has been discovered in this country is when it comes to HD radio, digital is worse. &nbsp;Thus far, HD radio has the following going for it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proprietary system with expensive licensing fees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complicated infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insufficient building penetration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor performance in mobile reception environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of original programming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adjacent channel interference<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor receiver sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of general interest and\/or knowledge by the public<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these things have been well documented. \u00a0If you work for the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunication Commission (CRTC) and are thinking about this, contact me. \u00a0I&#8217;ll even invite you down for a drive around and you can experience HD radio, in all its glory, firsthand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They&#8217;ll run away screaming &#8220;NOOOOOOOO!&#8221; to this notion: Canada&#8217;s plan &#8220;B&#8221; might include iBiquity.
