{"id":1055,"date":"2011-09-05T10:18:10","date_gmt":"2011-09-05T14:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2023-04-29T13:51:57","modified_gmt":"2023-04-29T17:51:57","slug":"keys-combos-and-contractors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/2011\/09\/keys-combos-and-contractors\/","title":{"rendered":"Keys, combos and contractors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The contracting company I work for takes care of 40-50 radio stations at any given time spanning from NYC and southern Connecticut up to the Canadian border. \u00a0Stations or groups sign contracts and some go by the wayside on a fairly regular basis. \u00a0All of this makes for the &#8220;Giant Box of Keys,&#8221; to be carried around in the work truck or whatever vehicle one is driving while on call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/giant-box-of-keys.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/giant-box-of-keys.jpg\" alt=\"Giant box of keys\" class=\"wp-image-3526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/giant-box-of-keys.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/giant-box-of-keys-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/giant-box-of-keys-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/giant-box-of-keys-400x239.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Giant Box of Keys<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem with the Giant Box of Keys is it never seems to be up to date. \u00a0New stations or groups join and didn&#8217;t get added. \u00a0Other stations fire employees and feel compelled to change the locks after doing so. \u00a0Therefore, I have found the Giant Box of Keys to be a hit-or-miss proposition. \u00a0In my former life as Director of Engineering for Pamal Broadcasting and Dame Media before that, I sought to simplify things as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/master-self-set-combo-lock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"463\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/master-self-set-combo-lock.jpg\" alt=\"Master self set combination lock\" class=\"wp-image-3521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/master-self-set-combo-lock.jpg 463w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/master-self-set-combo-lock-138x150.jpg 138w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/master-self-set-combo-lock-277x300.jpg 277w, https:\/\/www.engineeringradio.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/master-self-set-combo-lock-400x431.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 463px) 100vw, 463px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Master self-set combination lock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I found that replacing all keyed padlocks with self-set combo locks made life much easier. \u00a0All of the tower fences, transmitter site fences, and road gates now had the same combination and could be changed to another combination easily if needed. \u00a0That eliminated digging through drawers looking for tower fence keys and or long walks back to the transmitter building because I forgot the key or the key didn&#8217;t work.
