The McMartin transmitter has been taken out and replaced by a Nautel NV-5. The AM is on 1320, I think that was on the air when I was up there last year. This year, my summer will be spent on Mt. We had an entry in the finals of the Wrangler Country Showdown (they came in 2nd place). I'm pretty sure it was 1984. I had a hand in the McMartin xmtr selection. Felt it was a strong choice. I left in 1986 and came back from 1994 to 1999 and left shortly after Excalibur bought the properties. Ray Kimball and Bob Vinicor have since purchased the AM and it's back to being community radio. I have a BF 5-K that I would not part with .. thankfully I have maintaied it since Charle Rebuilt it about 15 years ago. There is really no reason to replace it. all the parts are still available... That just hasn't happened around here! The grounded-grid power amplifiers for FM are the best designs available for FM broadcast. RCA started with them right after WWII, but with the advent of tetrodes suddenly changed their thinking. CCA FM transmitters were always grounded-grid, as was the older Standard 938 that I ran at 102.1 and 102.9. REL and Rust were also grounded-grid Power amplifiers with triodes. A simply excellent high-quality tube built by Amperex in Hicksville, LI, NY was the 5924 triode that was used extensively in the Standard, Rust, and REL rigs. Tube life was phenomenal and the stability was rock solid. I never could figure out why Gates, Collins, and RCA stuck with tetrodes with all of the screen bypass capacitor problems and instability that has plagued many maintenance engineers. Grounded-Grid is so simple and the driving power is additive to the output power, so it is really a winner in all aspects.
